I’ve been teaching music privately in London since 2010, working with adults, teenagers, and children. I have also served as a peripatetic music tutor in primary schools and after-school programs. As a musician, I’ve performed on BBC Radio & TV, collaborated on albums, and played countless live gigs. I’ve studied music theory, composition, guitar, piano, drum kit, violin, and voice, and hold the following qualifications: Grade 8 Music Theory (ABRSM), Grade 8 Guitar (Trinity), Jazz Diploma (DipLCM), Music A-Level & a BSc Hons degree from the University of Leeds (2000).
I generally use progressively graded materials from ABRSM and Trinity to guide students from the ‘Initial Grade’ (focusing on coordination and reading standard notation) through to Grades 1-5+. Lessons cover a wide range of topics including popular songs, different genres, scales, technical exercises, composition, and improvisation. You are also welcome to focus exclusively on a repertoire of your choice. For guitarists, we can use tablature and chord sheets instead of traditional notation if preferred.
We’ll explore the fundamentals of harmony (covered in ABRSM/Trinity Theory Grades 1-6), which will not only help with learning pieces but also provide the skills needed to compose your own music. Students can choose to take theory exams (Grades 1-8) online.
I draw inspiration from a wide range of artists and have an extensive collection of tutor books. I’m always eager to learn new material to prepare for your lessons, and I create customised score/tab documents using MuseScore notation software.
Here’s a few of my favourite artists:
Nick Drake, John Martyn, Neil Young, Laura Marling, Lianne La Havas, Mississippi John Hurt, Bill Withers, Carole King, Stevie Wonder, Nina Simone, Max Richter, Yann Tiersen, Beatles, Bach, Debussy, Chopin, Erik Satie, Philip Glass, Alexandre Desplat, Fernando Sor, Jobim, Jimi Hendrix, Jeff Buckley, Grizzly Bear, Radiohead, The Smile, Khruangbin, Talk Talk, John Frusciante, PJ Harvey, Fela Kuti, David Pajo, The Meters, Television, Mark Lanegan, Charlie Christian, Grant Green, Wes Montgomery, Blake Mills, Pino Palladino, Thundercat, D’Angelo, Khruangbin, Warren Ellis, Rival Consoles, Cristobal Tapia De Veer, Anne Nikitin, Nils Frahm, Floating Points, Four Tet …
